Badrinath is one of the Chota Char Dhams and it also figures in the major Chardham, this occupying a unique place in the pilgrimage circuit of Hindus. In fact, you could earn merit simply by going on a Badrinath Yatra if, for any reason, you cannot complete Chota Char Dham or Bada Chardham Yatras. According to legend Lord Vishnu meditated here in the harsh weather for thousands of years and his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, assumed the form of a Badri tree and shielded him, which is why the lord is known as Lord Badrinarayan here. Badrinath temple sits on the banks of the Alaknanda River with the Nilkantha Peak in the distance.
